Why cycling suits people running cannot

Cycling is non-impact, which changes who can do it and how much.

Running loads your joints with two to three times bodyweight on every stride. Cycling removes that almost entirely — the bike carries your weight. For anyone carrying excess bodyweight, returning from injury, or managing knee or hip issues, cycling permits far greater weekly training volume at the same perceived effort.

And volume is what drives results. Someone cycling five hours a week comfortably will out-train someone running two hours a week and constantly nursing niggles.

Where the effort actually goes

Aerodynamic drag scales with the cube of speed. Moving from 25 to 32 km/h can nearly double required power. Practical implications:

Commuting is training

A 20-minute each-way bike commute is roughly 40 minutes of activity, five days a week — around 3.5 hours weekly that costs no extra time because it replaces a journey you were making anyway. At a light 19 km/h pace that is roughly 1,600 kcal per week for a 70 kg rider.

Trakon logs commutes as normal rides, so this genuinely counts toward your weekly totals rather than disappearing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Trakon free for cycling?
Yes. GPS ride tracking, route maps, speed, distance, elevation and calorie estimates are all included free on iOS and Android.
Do I need a bike computer or sensors?
No. Your phone GPS provides speed, distance, route and elevation. Dedicated computers add power meter and cadence support, but are not required for the core data most riders use.
How many calories does an hour of cycling burn?
For a 70 kg rider: roughly 290 kcal at a light commuting pace, 490 kcal at a moderate pace and 730 kcal or more at a fast training pace.
Can Trakon track indoor cycling?
Partially. GPS cannot measure distance indoors, so log the session manually using the distance or duration shown on your turbo trainer or spin bike.
