A well-known approximation: running burns roughly 1 kcal per kg of bodyweight per kilometre. A 70 kg runner burns about 70 kcal per km, so a 5K is around 350 kcal and a marathon roughly 2,950 kcal — regardless of whether that 5K takes 20 or 35 minutes.
Speed changes how quickly you burn the calories, not the total for a fixed distance. This is why distance, not pace, is the primary lever for energy expenditure.
Running burns roughly 1.5–2× more than walking the same distance, because of the airborne phase and higher muscular demand. But total weekly volume and consistency matter more than per-session intensity for fat loss.
