BMR Calculator

Calculate your basal metabolic rate — the calories your body burns just to stay alive, before any movement or exercise.

What your BMR actually tells you

Your basal metabolic rate is the energy needed to keep you alive at complete rest — breathing, circulating blood, maintaining body temperature and repairing cells.

For most people BMR accounts for 60–70% of all calories burned in a day. That is why it is the foundation of every calorie target: exercise matters, but it is usually the smaller slice.

Never eat below your BMR for long

Sustained eating below BMR is a common beginner mistake. It tends to produce muscle loss, fatigue, hormonal disruption and poor adherence — and because muscle is metabolically active, losing it lowers your BMR further, making maintenance harder later.

What raises your BMR

To convert BMR into the number you actually eat against, run the TDEE calculator, which adds your daily movement and training.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMR the same as RMR?
They are close but not identical. BMR is measured under strict laboratory conditions after overnight fasting and full rest. RMR (resting metabolic rate) is measured under less strict conditions and comes out slightly higher, usually by 5–10%. In everyday use the terms are often interchanged.
Should I eat my BMR to lose weight?
No. You should eat below your TDEE, not below your BMR. Eating at or under BMR is unnecessarily aggressive for most people and increases the risk of muscle loss, low energy and rebound weight gain.
Why is my BMR lower than a friend of the same weight?
Body composition is the usual reason. Two people at 70 kg can have very different amounts of muscle, and muscle burns more calories at rest than fat. Age, sex, height and genetics also contribute.
Can I increase my BMR?
Yes, mainly by building and retaining muscle through resistance training and adequate protein intake. The effect is real but modest — typically tens of calories per day, not hundreds.
