What Should You Look for in a Fitness Tracking App?

GPS, heart rate, calories, nutrition, privacy — the complete checklist for choosing the right fitness app.

The fitness app checklist

There are hundreds of fitness apps on the App Store and Google Play. Most do a few things well and everything else poorly. Here's what actually matters when choosing one.

Why Trakon?

1. GPS tracking

If you walk, run or cycle outdoors, GPS tracking is essential. It records your route, distance, pace and elevation. Look for apps that show your route on a map and let you review past activities.

2. Heart rate monitoring

Some apps connect to chest straps or wrist-based monitors. If you use an Apple Watch or other wearable, make sure the app integrates with it. Heart rate data helps you train in the right zones.

3. Calorie tracking

Calories burned during exercise are estimated from activity type, duration and your body weight. But what about calories consumed? The best apps track both — so you can see the full energy picture.

4. Nutrition tracking

This is where many fitness apps fall short. Look for an app that lets you log meals easily — ideally with AI food scanning so you don't have to manually search for every item. Trakon includes this feature.

5. Distance and pace

For runners and cyclists, detailed pace analysis is crucial. Look for split times, average pace, and pace trends over time.

6. Progress reports

Weekly and monthly summaries showing your total distance, calories, workout frequency and trends. Visual charts are much more motivating than raw numbers.

7. Apple Watch / wearable integration

If you own a smartwatch, make sure the app syncs with it. This gives you wrist-based heart rate and the convenience of starting workouts from your watch.

8. Privacy

Your fitness data is personal. Check the app's privacy policy — does it sell your data? Does it share with third parties? Trakon does not sell user data. Your activity and nutrition information stays yours.

9. Community features

Some apps offer clubs, challenges and social features. These can be powerful motivators — sharing progress with friends and competing in challenges keeps you accountable.

10. Price

Many fitness apps have expensive monthly subscriptions. Trakon is free to download and use — GPS tracking, food scanning and progress charts are all included without a paywall.
